Troupe Courage, Calefax & Cappella Amsterdam

De Stoet is a transformative and tragicomic theatrical walk that sweeps through Amsterdam (Nieuw)West like a musical whirlwind of joy, loss and humour.

Conceived by initiator Adelheid Roosen of theatre collective Female Economy, in partnership with Cappella Amsterdam and Calefax. Directed by the internationally acclaimed Katrien van Beurden, who has assembled her actor collective Troupe Courage especially for this occasion.

"The vibrancy of this part of Amsterdam fits perfectly with the light gravity of our special funeral procession."

— de Volkskrant ★★★★

In The Procession, Sacha, the central character and a true artist of living, creates a mourning ritual in which he himself, fully alive despite an incurable illness, takes part. Together, we walk through gentle stillness, vibrant live music, and lyrical poetry alongside his theatre family, who share stories of grief, healing, and the resilience of life.

Sacha’s theatre family is made up of city residents with Dutch, Palestinian, Burundian, Afghan, Surinamese, Moroccan, and Turkish roots, among others. Be carried away by the hypnotic Burundian spoken chant of Joe de Bouffon, a figure somewhere between guide and clown. Encounter the bird that lovingly sings the song of unborn children. And the cat that remembers and preserves the final traces of someone you no longer are. Together, we transform the ordinary street into an alternative society, where the absurd and the vulnerable exist side by side.

The Procession transports you to the far corners of the world, from the sands of Afghanistan outside Sina’s childhood home, to the asylum seekers’ centre in Ter Apel with Berat and his red suitcase, to Nazmiye, who in the Netherlands would welcome death as though greeting a long lost friend. The performance weaves together individual and collective stories of ritual and mourning. Tears blend with dancing and laughter. For a moment, space emerges for both stillness and celebration, for pausing, and for moving forward.

The music is performed by Calefax, with vocals by Cappella Amsterdam. Young musicians from emergency shelter initiative Amsterdam Galaxy and youth network The Mall contribute soulful, rhythmic performances, accompanied by percussionist Wouter van der Wildt. Featuring a new composition by Ned McGowan, the music enters into dialogue with The Procession, becoming quiet, gathering momentum, and moving together to give strength to these stories.

The Procession is an invitation to explore our relationship with death, to show that sorrow and joy can coexist, and that the weight of life becomes lighter when we carry it together, with both tears and laughter.

Adelheid Roosen:

“The funeral procession has disappeared from the city, and I want it back. This rite de passage, this transition and journey from one state of being to the next. Let us not forget its slowing, expressive power. Let us not forget that what has passed has not yet been processed, and what is new has not yet been welcomed.

I still remember, as a child in our village, being allowed to drift along in the procession of a deceased neighbour, and how his widow let me grieve for my dead cat while holding her hand. So much tenderness still exists between people. Don’t we secretly long to comfort one another, whether shyly or exuberantly?

A transforming procession through the city. Katrien van Beurden turned out to be the most beautiful flower for my wish. She is the one I would want approaching with my coffin. With a blooming and bleeding heart, she took on the direction of our Procession.”

Katrien van Beurden:

“In The Procession, we celebrate life precisely now, in challenging times. We draw inspiration from the way each person carries their loss. Sometimes stumbling. Sometimes singing. At times with a trumpet. In complete silence. Or swinging along with a coffin. But together. And in motion. With Sacha Muller as our central figure, my great theatre friend and companion for more than sixteen years. Beyond the stories within The Procession, I wish for him all the stories that live inside him as well.”

©Sjoerd Derine

"The Procession is an exercise, a dreamed-of farewell in which his story, hope, and fear find a foundation in the stories of many others from diverse corners of the world."
