Troupe Courage (formerly Theater Hotel Courage) is an international players' collective that makes performances and gives workshops worldwide. They create a very virtuoso theatre, in which they use archetypal masks to play characters from all layers of society, such as the old woman, the dictator, the playing child and the refugee. In a completely empty space with live music, the actors captivate the audience with their transformations and collected stories come to life in the viewer's imagination. Stories about how everyone tries to survive in today's world, which can be both tragic and primal. Troupe Courage creates folk theater at a high level, in which the actor's drive and the ingenuity of the actor flourish and where the energy and the fun of the game are exuding.
Troupe Courage, founded by Katrien van Beurden, has traveled the world in recent years as a group of explorers with a bag full of masks. During this trip, the group played in special and unusual places, collected local stories and met international players who joined the troupe. She played in a village square for a tribe in Shantiniketan (India), in the Freedom Theater of the refugee camp in Jenin (Palestine) and in the community center of Accra (Ghana). The interaction on these playgrounds was pure and raw and the connecting power of theater was more tangible than ever

NII QUARTLEAI QUARTEY
| Actor and Theater maker |
Ghana
I have over ten years of experience as an academic, professional and activist focused on the use of theater arts in the promotion and protection of the public health of disadvantaged populations. My work with Theater Hotel Courage has given me a unique opportunity to further pursue my keen interest in issues relating to environment, culture and the role of the creative arts. It has brought my experience to bear in various capacities of supporting the arts in Ghana.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Philosophy degrees from the University of Ghana, Legon. My training in the arts as well as social sciences provides a strong interdisciplinary background to the festival. My studies have equipped me with the tools and skills needed to write research proposals, design and conduct research, as well as to analysis and disseminate research findings. I have acquired both practical and theoretical knowledge of initiating and managing research projects independently and to deadlines.
Through my professional experience I have honed my relevant artistic skills and gained experience of working directly with vulnerable groups on sensitive subjects. For example, I worked successfully as an arts Facilitator among men who have sex with men. Additionally, I have worked with prison inmates, female sex workers and with adolescents, at a school for the deaf. I have excellent skills in using techniques from Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal's Pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed, which has informed creative and participatory approaches in previous research works on modern slavery and safeguarding in James Town.
I have been able to learn with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and share knowledge, experience and skills at Troupe Courage. This has widened my skills and knowledge in playing with mask, music and mime. Consequently, it has aided me to initiate community action and share best practice. Working with management and other team members, I have improved my teamwork skills and sharpen my writing/performance skills, and thus build my capacity as someone committed to working in this field.
My demonstrated commitment to using arts and activism to improving communities' lives makes me a suitable personnel for all manner of artistic project who will ensure that the arts impacts positively on the community in Ghana, as well as on my own career.
